Well, it wasn't exactly priceless, but Mike and I had been questioning the practicality of paying for him to come to New Orleans with me for one night, and by the end of the evening he called it priceless.
The SES AUA (sectional meeting for urology association) was in NOLA and I had to present two posters in a 1.5 hr session. Pam came down for the weekend for a visit, but more importantly to babysit for us. While my half of the trip was covered for business, Mike's wasn't and in the perspective of hours away, it seemed an unreasonable cost.
But what a night. Gorgeous weather and we were really able to do a lot in just one evening. Took a streetcar out of the foul smelling French Quarter (Mardi Gras was last week and apparently it takes more than that time to get the smell of vomit, urine and beer out of the street) into the Garden District just before the sun set with a nice breeze. Walked through one of those interesting cemeteries that are particular to NOLA, breezed through Commander's Palace on our way to a fantastic meal at Coquette. Finished it off with some live music on Frenchman street in a packed bar where everyone was just having a great time. We were relaxed, carefree and maybe even a little frisky. Enough for a slightly intoxicated Mike to claim it was priceless.
I should also mention that Jazzfest in 2005 was the last time that Mike and I hung out as friends. Ironically enough, we stayed at the same hotel we did back then. Much different scenario this time!
